The Lurking Fear (1994)

The Lurking Fear (1994) dir. C. Courtney Joyner, Full Moon Entertainment

Surprised it took this long to get to Charles Band's Full Moon group. Lovecraft's stories did inspire quite a few Full Moon flicks, but not as many as you would think. This being the second take on the story "the Lurking Fear", could Band and his merry group do better than the ultra low budget Dark Heritage?

John Martense (Blake Adams) is going home. He's served his time in state's custody and now it's off to the old homestead of Lefferts Corner to start anew. Sort of, you see he isn't in town to start a business or actually go straight. No, before his father died the old man sent John half of a map. The other half belongs to funeral director Knaggs (Vincent Schiavelli), who was the old man's best friend/second in command. With the map combined it should lead them to the right burial plot where John's father hid the loot from his last robbery. So, all they half to do is slap those old parchment pieces together and do some digging. Easy job, right?

Not quite...sisters Catheryn (Ashley Lauren) and Leigh (Ilincia Goia) made a brief pit stop in the small hamlet during a thunderstorm. Things went from bad to worse when Leigh was dragged underground. Dr. Haggis (Jeffery Combs) gets dragged into her revenge plot, but she doesn't care about any buried treasure. She just wants to kill all those monsters. Encountering John shouldn't be that much of a hassle. He wants the money, she wants to kill the monsters that more than likely would complicate the digging job anyway, why shouldn't they work together, right?

Except that Mr. Bennett (Jon Finch) has just arrived in town. He knows about the buried money, and with his two armed goons (Joe Leavengood, Allison Mackie), he figures the money by right belongs to him. He doesn't believe in any underground monsters either. Pity that they believe in him...

Pretty good for a Full Moon film. Combs steals the show, of course. It doesn't have that much in common with Lovecraft's story, but it is a good effort all the same.
