Horror Countdown 2015: Friday the 13th, Part 3 (1982)

Friday the 13th, Part 3 (1982) dir. Steve Miner, Paramount Pictures/Georgetown Productions/Jason Productions/Sean S. Cunningham Productions

This isn't a Friday or the 13th, but I felt it was time to move past the vampires and mad barons and take a look at the slashers, or the horror icons of the 80's.

We open with a five minute recap of Part 2, to wit Ginny's fighting with the potato sacked Jason (Richard Brooker). We also see Jason getting up and pulling the machete out without too much issue.

Twenty-four hours later, Jason picks up some new duds after killing some utterly pointless characters. Apparently you can just ignore a sucking chest wound. After walking off the injury, Jason makes his way to Higgins Haven, a farm near the infamous camp and lake.

Also staying at the farm is a group of friends, simply there to have some fun. As per tradition they have mostly one trait per character, so let's have the rundown:

Chris Higgins (Dana Kimmell)-nice girl
Vera Sanchez (Catherine Parks)-Hispanic and Chris's best friend. She's mostly brought as to be the blind date for...
Shelly (Larry Zernar)-practical joker
Andy (Jeffery Rogers)-nice guy, hand walker enthusiast, and boyfriend to...
Debbie (Tracie Savage)-pregnant
Chuck (David Katimas)-stoner
Chili (Rachael Howard)-stoner chick

The group is making their way to the farm, which is being run by Chris's boyfriend Rick (Paul Kratka). On their way they pass the store Jason's picked up his new outfit and yet another crazy old man who warns them to turn back.

From there things progress. We get plenty of hi-jinks from Shelly, who manages to piss off the group so much he whines his way into going with Vera on a supply run, lest he get his ass kicked. Once in town, which is pretty quiet considering the mass slaughter which just happened, Vera gets hassled by a racist store clerk. Shelly tries to do something, but only manages in pissing off a group of the type of bikers often found in 80's movies.

The bikers follow them back to the farm. They steal Chris's gas with the intent to burn down the barn...pity that Jason was hiding in there and he doesn't take kindly to be woken up. Once the three are dispatched the killings start in earnest.

We do get an origin for Jason's hockey mask, in case we needed one. Shelly, dressing in a wetsuit and said mask, jumps out of the water with a spear gun and threatens Vera. Jason, not caring for Shelly's sense of humor either, kills the fool and takes the mask. He also takes the spear gun, because you don't turn down a free spear gun.

From there the cast is dispatched and Chris is our final girl dejour. We have a pretty blatant rip-off of part one's ending, and since this only part 3 that is not a good sign when they start ripping things of these soon. Nice special effects, even if the 3-D parts are overdone, but even that can't help a scrip this lazy. Why is Jason killing these people in particular? How does Jason just overcome a machete to the chest? What happened to Jason's hair for that matter?
