Horror 2024 Countdown: Curucu, Beast of the Amazon (1956)

Curucu, Beast of the Amazon (1956), dir. Curt Sidomark, Jewel Productions

Moving into the Universal adjacent section, we open with the other film on the Mole People double feature.

Rick Dean (John Bromfield) is having problems. His plantation is losing workers at an astronomical rate. His native guide Tupanico (Tom Payne) has the answer-Curucu. What or Who is Curucu? Basically a giant bird monster.

Along the way they pick up Dr. Romar (Beverly Garland). She's searching the Amazon for headhunters. Why? She thinks the chemicals they use for shrinking heads can be used for curing cancer.

Tupanico is helpful of course. Why, look at the attention he pays to his master's rifle in cleaning it! The fact the gun won't fire when the monster appears is surely an unhappy coincidence

Disappointing. This never got a proper release so there were rumors this was a lost film. After seeing it, yeah, maybe it should have stayed lost.
