American Ninja (1985) dir. Sam Firstenberg, Cannon Group/Golan-Globus Productions
Ninjas and Cannon-like peanut butter and chocolate.
In the Philippines, things are a foot. An army convoy is attacked by the Black Star ninjas! The local base commander, Colonel Hickock (Guich Koock)'s daughter was almost kidnapped!
Note the almost there; Joe Armstrong (Michael Dudikoff) was there and thankfully saved her. Couldn't save the rest of his unit but the effort was there. Corp. Curtis Jackson (Steve James) actually makes friends with Joe and we learn a few things. Mostly that Joe has no past.
Seriously, Joe has ZERO memory of his past save the last few years. Had no trouble enlisting though; Patricia (Judie Aronson) thinks he's the bee's knees and since her daddy is the Colonel, Joe might be hotter water than he thinks.
Of course there's a reason why the Black Star Ninjas attacked-seems Colonel Hickock is skimming off the top. Can Joe figure it out in time?
Not bad, but Dudikoff is no Sho Kosugi. A bit simple and even the 'higher ranked guy is really working for the bad guys' was a getting a bit long in the tooth by this point.
