And here's where we first get the second major break from the main continuity, sort of. We saw 2 issues be reprints from the UK series, but here the story picks up from the Headmasters miniseries.
We have a recap of the Headmasters series up until now. The Autobot Fortress Maximus has been rebuilt, stronger and bigger than ever. The Nebulans question their leader Galen about this course of action, but he assures them it is for the best.
Back on Earth, Spike Witwicky arrives home from college and boy does he have some catching up to do. The house is still totaled, but Sparkplug is ok. He gives his oldest boy a rundown on what has happened, causing Spike to haul tail to Mount St. Hilary to check on Buster. He fails to find him, but he does find a shrunken Goldbug.
The Headmasters arrive and things aren't exactly improved. Galen is all business, basically telling Spike that Buster's (he witnesses his brother's kidnapping via Goldbug's memory) situation isn't a concern. At least not for him; if Spike wants to get himself killed he is welcome to.
Somehow this answer fails to please Spike.
The Decepticon Headmasters, however, arrive and make things worse. A pitched battle happens, and Galen is slain while saving Spike. The human youth takes the dying alien's helmet and turns the tide of battle.
Yeah, 38 issues in and we finally see Spike. This is pretty much the main direction the series will be taking for a while, as the Headmaster toys have just come out.
