Aroma of Troma Week: Border Cop (1980)

Border Cop (1980) dir. Christopher Leitch, Connaught Latham/Donald Langdon Production/Grupo Filmico International/Troma Entrainment

Frank Cooper (Telly Savalas) is a border cop. He's about retire, although you could argue he's mentally already there as he spends most of his shifts asleep and gives the people crossing over little more than a mild wave.

He gets a new partner. Hale (Robin Cooper) is different, in that he actually works. Then there is his commanding officer, Moffat (Eddie Albert). Moffat is corrupt to the core, but Cooper has the attitude of 'not my business'. Moffat is working with gang lord Suarez (Michael V. Gazzo), but again, Cooper's attitude if 'not my business'.

Cooper does have a soft spot though. He's friendly with Romero (Danny De La Paz). Romero needs work though and ends up working for Suarez. Trouble arises and Suarez fingers Romero has the problem. The kid is in a tight spot. Can Cooper change his attitude in time?

Not terrible; Savalas had enough charisma for three people and he uses it to maximum effect. With anyone else Cooper would have been a deadweight slob but Savalas plays him with just so much charm you can almost forgive him for the three naps he takes everyday.
