Re-Writing the Book: Brawl for All

Just thinking about one of the dumber things the WWF did back in 1998. What would I have done?

So, 1998

Vince Russo, after some prompting from John Layfield, comes up with a tough guy tournament. The catch is, everything is real!

Now, the how and why this was a stupid idea has been explained elsewhere. Seriously, the whole concept of pro wrestling is that it's scripted. Having the guys really knock the tar out of each other defeats the whole point, plus you're at risk for putting your guys out of commission for who knows how long.

The other kicker is the Powers That Be wanted "Dr. Death" Steve Williams to win, given that he bragged about tough he was, plus it would have been a great build up for his upcoming feud with "Stone Cold" Steve Austin.

So naturally Dr. Death gets KO'd by Bart Gunn in the second round. How would I fix it?

Keep the tournament, just have the rounds on TV. Sort of King of the Ring, but free with one section per week. You can have rules (time limits, have the wrestlers buy in with the winner taking the whole pot, etc.) but in the end just make it a regular wrestling match. Have Dr. Death win, maybe with a few close calls here and there so the result isn't obvious.

From there Dr. Death wins the Brawl then decides to go after Stone Cold. If the crowd likes it, maybe bring it back once a year.
