Horror 2019 Countdown: Drakula istanbul'da (1953)

Drakula istanbul'da (1953) dir. Mehmet Muhtar, And Films

We've gone past the Universal, Hammer, and the bloody slashers. In the past I've taken the time to look at either famous horror actors or characters. This year I'll be taking a look at both Count Dracula and vampires in general.

Lawyer Azmi (Bulent Oran) travels to the distant countryside to deal with Count Drakula (Atif Kaptan). The Count is very keen to relocate to Istanbul. He wants...fresh blood after all...

Soon Azmi is held captive inside the count's castle. Noticing his host crawling down the walls gives him a hint that maybe something isn't right. He tries to bash the count's head in with a shovel, but all that does is annoy the count. Can Azmi escape the castle and warn the outside world?

My Turkish is terrible, but as far as adaptations go this is actually shockingly faithful to Stoker's work. More than the Universal one at any rate, plus this is the first vampire film to show the vampire with fangs. Belly dancers aside, this does feature Dracula as both a vampire and a direct reference to the historical Vlad the Impaler (who wasn't that popular with Turkey, if you recall).
