Well, a Lovecraft film from the infamous Ulli Lommel. Surely the creative genius behind 1980's the Boogeyman and the Devonsville Terror would craft a half-way decent story, filled with shock and horror aplenty? Short version: no
Slightly longer version; Tara (Victoria Ullmann) and Billy (Christian Behm) are in trouble. The pair wake up in a strange place with no memory of how they got there. Considering where they wake up seems to be a basement filled with rotting and mutilated corpses, that is not a good thing.
It must assuredly isn't, as the pair are welcomed by a voice identifying itself as 'the Puppetmaster' and he wants to play a game. If they win, they can go free. If they lose...well, the end result is obvious. To date, no one has won. Will Tara and Billy be the first or there is there something worse awaiting them?
Also known as Dreams in the Witch-House, for some reason as there are no witches in it, this is easily the worse Lovecraft film I've reviewed so far. Some might be better than others, some might be more faithful, but in most of those there is something. Some inkling or wholesale reference from one of Lovecraft's stories. This is a Saw ripoff through and through, and not even the good ones either.
The basement lair is too lit, so when we see out two nimrods stumbling around, screaming how they're lost you wonder why don't they head towards the door? This is barely a level above a student film and a few levels below cheap 90's pornography. Even the film stock looks cheap. If you have a Lovecraft hankering, I'd say stick with Stuart Gordon.
